The Iris Hitchens Memorial Scholarship

The Iris Hitchens Scholarship has been established in memory of Iris Hitchens
to recognize and encourage a student who is pursuing a degree in a medical
profession (including nursing), music, or education, and has evidenced
Christian commitment by his/her participation in church and serving his/her community.

The annual scholarship award will be a maximum of $1,000 ($500 each semester)
payable to the college or university of the recipient's choice. Second semester award
will be granted upon receipt of transcript showing recipient is in good academic standing.

The scholarship committee, chosen from the Active Members of Salem United Methodist Church,
will meet in May to review the list of candidates and select a recipient.

                          The applicant must be a member of Salem United Methodist Church and meet the following criteria:
                                      1.    Neatly completed application.
                                      2.    An essay of approximately 500 words on the following topic:
                                             How has your membership in Salem United Methodist Church impacted your life?
                                      3.    Personal letters of recommendation from 2 adults, other than relatives.
                                      4.    Applicant must be a high school graduate or have obtained a G.E.D.
                                      5.    Acceptance letter from an accredited college, community college or technical school, or verification
                                             of current academic standing at an institution of higher learning.
                                      6.    Applicant must be pursuing a degree in a medical profession (including nursing), music or education.
                                      7.    Applicant may be required to be interviewed by the Iris Hitchens Scholarship Committee.

Applications are due by May 1st
